Project Description:

J&J Contractors, Inc. were contracted with the General Services Administration to construct a new US Land Port of Entry at the border of the United States and Canada in Calais, ME.

The 100,000SF border crossing station is located on a remote site in the north east corner of Maine.  This facility will be a landmark for the GSA as well as the United States Government in partnership with the Canadian Government.

As the site is in a remote location, building supplies (i.e. concrete & bituminous paving) were onerous to obtain, with the most local suppliers being within an hour and a half driving distance.

Subcontractors were able to set up onsite temporary plants to produce these materials for ease of use on the site.

J&J Contractors, Inc. self performed the site work, the concrete formwork, and foundations. We encountered approximately 50,000CY of ledge during excavation that was blasted, crushed and reused onsite, as well as 75,000CY of unsuitable materials that have been transported offsite. The project also included a 200,000SF steel reinforced concrete apron.

The project is targeting LEED Gold Certification.
