J&J Contractors Inc. was selected through the State of Massachusetts DCAM competitive bid program as the general contractor for the addition and renovations of the Thoreau Elementary School in Concord, MA.
To prepare for the construction of the Thoreau Elementary School addition, J&J demolished a majority of the existing elementary school then completed the erection of a new 70,000SF addition. The new age design of the addition called for the new space to incorporate classrooms clustered into “neighborhoods” grouped by age, tutorial rooms located between pairs of classrooms, a fixed seat auditorium, and a grouping of a cafeteria, an auditorium and a gymnasium.
The remaining 10,000 SF partition of the Thoreau Elementary School was renovated to include an upgraded life-safety system and refurbished classroom and bathroom spaces. The exterior grounds were revamped with on site and off site traffic system and drainage system improvements. New athletic fields were also developed on the grounds.
The facility serves grades K-5 with the capability of accommodating 575 students and faculty personnel.
